Greatness of No Limit (GNL) by Isaac ssejjombwe.
By the look of things, the kidandali dominance in the Ugandan music industry is soon becoming history being replaced by hip hop which is fast rising through one guy known as GNL ZAMBA who has kept the flag up high with his unique style of expression through his hits that have relentlessly kept on climbing charts in the East African region. Music Uganda was able to catch up with the Luga flow maestro and below is what transpired in our dialogue.
What does GNL stand for because a lot of people out there have no clue what it stands for?
GNL stands for Greatness of No Limit (Legend of Zamba) and every album is a chapter in every story.
Talk about your recently concluded Riddles of Life concert at Kyadondo rugby club?
My concert /album launch was one of the best produced concerts ever in Uganda’s history by a local act because of the tremendous crowd; good sound and great performances from various artists that were in attendance.
You are one hip hop artist who has achieved a lot within the shortest time possible .How have you done that in this kidandali dominated industry?
I’ve achieved a lot in this game because I listen a lot and integrate professionalism and creativity in everything I do.
How were you able to record a hit with the late Ely Wamala?
That is a little mystery yet to be solved.
Since you are the first and only artist to do this, should we expect yet another song with another fallen artist?
Well, that will depend where creativity will lead me.
Apparently, Mr. Spageon Wamala, son to the late Eli Wamala said you pirated Ani yali amanyi and he also added that you don’t have any rights over the song during his father’s memorial at theater Labonita a few days back. What’s your take on this?
According to my record label (Platinum entertainment), we got consent from Mr. Eli Wamala’s heir(names withheld) who currently lives in the U.S and he gave us a green light to go ahead and do the song through Email.
Is it true that you and Navio are having serious beef?
My main goal is to make music that entertains my fans and airing on negative energy is the least of my key aspects. If I had beef with Navio, he wouldn’t have been at my album launch which goes for other hip hop artists.
So what’s next for GNL?
I’ve been doing country tours and last week, I heard successful shows in Hoima and masindi and I’ll be going to Lira on Eid day after which I’ll be traveling to Dubai later on this month.
I’ll in London on Independency weekend, Alabama in December and Benin in January then my Dreaming in colour album will be set for launching early next year.
Besides music, what else are you venturing into?
I’m into charity and leadership conferences that motivate the youths through KIBO foundation and besides that, I’m also into social responsibility activities like preaching youths to take education as their main priority. As Baboon Forest entertainment, we are venturing into printing T-shirts, caps and key holders
What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in the entertainment world?
I encounter many challenges but the one that usurps them all is haters especially the people who were friends previously but turned against me since I achieved my success but what keeps me going is that every obstacle is a stepping stone in every challenge because money is an insatiable good.
Should we expect more hits from you especially in English or Luga flow is your only area of expertise?
I’m putting the last pieces of my double album which will be a second album to cut through and this time round, I’m focusing on defining hip hop to conquer Africa.
How about future collaborations?
I’m looking forward to working with Brian Luv an R$B star, Goodlyf, Million Styles from Sweden and Baboon crew members.
Which studios are credited for the production of your songs?
I can work with any one good but apparently, Magic studios belonging to goodlyf, Swangz Avenue, Rota records by Sam Lamara and Hans Records are the studios I’ve so far worked with.
Who inspired you to join the music industry?
The hip hop culture and the way of life inspired me to join music but artists like Nas and Red man played a big part in making me who I am today.
Were will GNL be five years from now?
Five years, from now, GNL will be sitting on five billion shillings, the C.E.O baboon forest, having a Grammy on his belt, a house in a shape of a pyramid and with a daughter by the names of Nandy.
Any words for upcoming hip hop artists that want to be successful like you?
Because I love you guys and for the sake that I don’t want to be on top alone, just practice everyday and eat your vegetables (avoid Beef).
