Shiru: It was an interesting escapade. I played at clubs like Moonlite, Volts and Entice. I also played in Scotland and Denmark.

MU: How do you rate the Djing scene in Uganda today?
Shiru: Over the years Dj’s have gained lots of respect. At least now people and other industry stakeholders take dj’s as vital persons in the development of the music industry.

MU: Do you have any mix-tapes or video mixes out to the market and where can one access your mixes?
Shiru: Quite many I am actually finalizing this here(points to his laptop) and if one needs a copy they can call me through;0752578495 or personally come to shop 10 ZL3 Zinabu Aziz arcade or Sab videos.

MU: What was the audience response to your mixes in the UK? Any crazy encounters?
Shiru: Man its always mad crazy especially from the female fans. However, I appreciate the fact that I got to meet people like Bennieman, Leona Lewis, Lots of Nigerian stars and Brick and Lace with whom I hope to go on a European and later African tour as their Dj.

MU: There’s rumor that many Dj’s in Uganda today favour some artists than others which in the end keeps some artists in the dark. Is that fair?
Shiru: To speak the truth, if it’s happening then I have no idea. However, as a Dj trying to make my mark on the world scene, all that matters to me as a good record.    It doesn’t matter whether I know you or not. However, yes some musicians are my personal friends.

MU: You are known to be a fashion conscious Dj, what labels have you been wearing lately?
Shiru: Now day’s I am into Ed hardy and I am using Usher as cologne. It’s just too perfect for me.

MU: What does Shiru do in his free time besides Djing?
Shiru: Shiru thinks about new Djing ideas and watches movies in his free time.

MU: What would you tell any of the upcoming Ugandan Dj’s.
Shiru: Well its all about hard work and practice if you want to create your mark.

DJ Shiru: King of the Remix

There’s one DJ in Uganda that’s been famed as a remix king. He’s famous for lending dancehall rhythms to even dancehall beats giving them a much wider appeal with the masses. He could easily turn a lazy sounding song in to a dancehall favorite by applying some groovy dancehall magic to it. Stop the guessing it’s none other than DJ Shiru who’s for the past four years or so managed to win a cult following from both fans and recording artists. He’s one of Uganda’s pioneer video mixing VJ’s that enable discotheque fans to dance to what they can watch.  Sitting at his shop number 10 on the first flow of Zainabu Aziz building along Wilson road, he looks quite busy and this you can tell from the queues of music collectors, recording artists or fans seeking his services. He style perhaps also explains his taste in fashion. He’s fond of neat denim jeans and urban designer T-shirts and trainers. Music Uganda caught up with the famous DJ Shiru who’s just returned from the United Kingdom where he’d gone for a couple of djing escapades.
