Esther Mirembe out to change the gospel scene
By Julie Erusa
Esther
best describes herself as someone who is very ambitious and just
wants to praise the Lord. She sings in mass choir in the
Christian Life Church in Bwaise.
Esther began singing in 1995 in Omega Nursery and Primary
School, she also said it was about this time when she won a
bursary from the then Mayor of Kampala City – Christopher Igga.
In 2003 she won a gospel award in Kenya as the outstanding
leading vocalist. She also won a recording contract at the same
occasion but she didn't go through with it because she had to
travel back home ( Uganda ) and continue with her studies.
Back home
Due to financial constraints, she could not continue with
singing so, she went ahead and continued with school.
In 2005, she started recording in Hope Studio “No one else”. At
this time she was also doing backup for different gospel
musicians like Yasin Keya. She has a six track album already
done. Some of the tracks include; “Wakisa” meaning “He has
mercy”, “No one else”, “Jukira omusalaba” meaning remember the
cross which has a dancehall remix, Halleluyah which is in both
in Luganda and Kiyaranda, Upenda meaning omukwano in Luganda and
friendship in English and Omusalaba meaning cross.
Most of these songs are already playing on the local radio
stations like Power FM, Impact and Kaboozi and many more.
What's next?
Esther plans to change the whole Gospel and she states that the
main problem faced by the Gospel sector is lack of audience
