Fireman Kakokolo

It is very hot on Uganda's music scene. On this hot afternoon, I was sitting at DV8, waiting for Uganda's ragga/benga sensation, Red Banton. Suddenly, I see a flash of red and I strain my eyes for a better look. It was none else but the red man himself, Red Banton in his trademark colour.

In town was another light skinned guy. Both made their way easily through the joint, relaxed but not careless, faces taut but not aggressive. They were a bit late but that's alright.

We soon sat down and began to talk. Red Banton made the introductions. The fellow is his protégé and goes by the name is Fireman Kakokolo, The reason for our meeting.

"Ya man, this is the rude bwai. The fireman himself." Says Red.

They met way back in '95 through a friend Andrew B. "I started out due to the era, you know. Everybody was into it, the walk the talk, the singing… it was everywhere. I just got hooked into it. Plus it [the talent] came easily."

Hailing from Makindye, the young ragga artist has released two songs, Hajjati and Obwana bw'enkoko, about an unfaithful woman and growth in life respectively.
The problem they both face like all others in the industry is dishonest promoters. "But I'm doing my best." says Red Banton. Already the songs are being played in CBS and Simba fm stations. "In the mean time if you wanna see me, you can catch me at Kawempe Clicks night-spot with the essence band. That's where you get fiiiiiirrrreeeeee
