Lemmy Cool
Many
had no idea who this guy was when he walked to 1st floor NIC
building one morning. Lemmy Cool is a kind, soft-spoken honest
and down to earth 'Contemporary Ugandan' crooner. I initially
knew him as a DJ and didn't know he could sing like he does.
His face is very common in DJ circles and many for his
'Tool-Spinning' skills know him. He is a Deejay for Heart
Entertainment Mobile Disco. The first time we actually saw him
sing was at The Spot After in Ntinda during the Michael Ross
launch. I had heard his music before though but didn't know it
was by him.
Well well well. So this is the guy whose song 'Nakupenda sana
mama' is causing traffic jam on our airwaves. Believe me, not
many artists feel their music the way this guy does. You can
just know by listening to him sing and watching the extremely
emotional expressions on his face (as seen in the pictures).
That's why we have dubbed him 'The Crooner'.
"Talent," he states flatly. No drama, no superstar air. Just
plain and simple. I like this guy. Talent and experience since
he began singing at the age of nine years in primary school, all
the way through to secondary school. However, he kept his
musical activities from his parents who did not want anything to
interfere with his education.
After his school years that gave him a good backbone in music,
Lemmy started trying out and exploring his skills. He soon found
himself with a full time job of manning the consoles of a mobile
disco known as Heart Sounds as well as singing in karaoke joints
around Kampala. It wasn't long before a prominent artist in
Uganda spotted him in late 2000.
"Joe Tabula (of Onsuza mu ngato fame) came over and
congratulated me after I sang in DV8 in Kampala. We later spoke
at length and we became have been good friends since then. Both
he (Tabula) and Tendo Kaggwa (Heart Entertainment) have really
done a lot in backing me up and encouraging me in this
business."
With support from both artists, Lemmy managed to record a song
Binsobedde released in 2001 which became a hit shortly after. As
a result, he found himself with a job offer that landed him at
Globetech Entertainment as a DJ as well as a singer. With better
remuneration, Lemmy started releasing hit after hit.
Going back to BK Studios that birthed his debut hit, Lemmy
returned with a second successful song, Embidde a song about
alcohol. Then Julie the widely popular zouk love song followed
shortly. And now currently ruling the airwaves is Nakupenda sana
mama released a few months back.
Lemmy Cool is soon going to become
one of the most popular artists from Uganda and he is more than
ready to represent us worldwide. And close behind him,
monitoring his progress will be musicuganda.com to let you know
what's up with this talented dude.
Speaking of names, how did he get to be called Lemmy Cool any
way?
"I was quite stubborn during my school days to the point that my
friends got irritated and started asking me to cool down. So I
started responding by saying 'OK, lemme cool, lemme cool man'
which instead amused them, causing them to christen me 'Lemmy
Cool'. Otherwise my real name is Ronnie Kiyaga."
Well, all I can say is kudos to this should I say, upcoming
star? And like we always say at MU, keep watching this space for
more info on Lemmy. As for me? Lemme cool down man, lemme cool… |
