Lucky II is a destined partnership

One half of the London-based duo of Unik and Eddie believes that their music partnership was meant to be.
“I had been approached by so many people suggesting that I work with them but I have always told them am going to think about it. When Eddie brought it up, I found myself agreeing without taking time to go and think about it,” Unik says about a working relationship that was conceived at the set of a ‘kina-Uganda’ film set.

Starring alongside Ugandan boxer Justin Jjuuko, Unik was at the receiving end of the retired pugilist’s punches which sent him flying and landing in front of Eddie at the cameras. Eddie had heard him sing at Danni Love Studios. It wasn’t long before the small talk got round to the progress of each other’s music career-and the possibility of the two working together.

While Eddie has nothing much to show for the history of his career- save for his smoothly wavering voice and a career stint in the media with WBS TV back in Uganda, Unik on the other hand has been hanging in the shadows of the industry for over ten years. This was mainly in Kampala where he was a regular at Karaoke nights especially at Hope Mukasa’s Sabrina’s Pub and DV8. Then there were appearances in DJ Rota’s school runs with Rainbow Productions. Although he prides himself in a having worked with a whole generation of artistes with Jose Chameleon, Bobi Wine and Red Banton featuring somewhere on his endless list, his sole pride now is his first record in Lucky II’s debut single Omenya.

The Music

“We want to present a different style of music from what people are used to hearing. We are trying to make music that can be appreciated by as many people as possible,” Unik says.
With this they also intend to crack the language barriers by singing in Luganda, Swahili as well as English.
Omenya was jointly written by the two artistes. Unik wrote the verses and Eddie put the chorus together and it was produced by William Kiberu. Its slow R&B rhythm separates it from the ‘usual’ perfect-smile, magnificent-legs that are the order of the day. The chorus is more jazzed up to tend towards a danceable tempo that will prompt a nod to someone with a good taste for music.

Omenya comes complete with a video shot by Urban Films Entertainment UK. A collection of simple images mainly shot indoors or with a backdrop. Something that defies expectations form artistes based in Europe who are known to feature posh cars and women in skimpy outfits,
“We try to be as down-to-earth as possible. Why should we feature a Porsche in a video that we do not drive in real life? Or women in dressed in outfits that they can never wear and walk on the street?”

The Album

With two songs already complete, Lucky II is scheduled to have its debut album out by the summer. Although it is still a bit too early to be thinking about an album title, if Omenya is anything to go by as a standard measure, it promises to be a debut worth looking forward to.

“This is our first song. We have only recorded two and as we work on the rest of the music we are bound to get better and better especially since we are taking the positive comments we are getting from people on board,” Eddie explains
