Maurice Kirya

Maurice kirya is a unique blend of soul, afro and rnb sounds, he likes to call his musical style fashioned soul, the two time nominee for pearl of Africa music awards was also nominated for the kisima awards in Kenya.

Maurice Kirya must really be blessed! He currently has two songs on Sanyu FM's East African countdown; these are 'Lets go' and 'Beera naabo'. Lets go was number one yesterday, don't know how it will perform today. The track is what I'd refer to as hardcore up-tempo dance RnB. On this, he talks about a fly girl whose beauty he cant stand to see in the wrong hands and keeps saying to her,'lets go!' In typical RnB fashion, he uses words like "I'm hoping that you catch that kiss, cause you may need it when you're feeling low". The track was mixed in Europe and the vocals were recorded by Steve Jean at Fenon Records in Industrial Area.

The other song, 'Beera Naabo' is standing on it's own and making it all the way. It doesn't sound like any of his previous releases and is therefore not riding on their reputation. It is a fusion of Contemporary Ugandan and RnB and is evenly written in both Luganda and English right down to the chorus (great formula).

The other track on this compilation are the track 'stop' that won him a PAM award nomination and it's remix remade by Steve Jean, it's original producer. Bina Damu also made it to the charts and at some point was the track with the most hits on this website as revealed on the countdown on our index page. Press reports have it that Maurice is going on tour with AY in Tanzania some time soon and who knows? He may be a household name in Bongo by the time he comes back. For now, he is still in town, we know cause we called him a few minutes ago; he seems to be very excited about his blessings. I think it is appropriate to state that 'he's got the midas touch, every thing he touch turns to gold'. The government should pay people like him to make music for the masses because he has a 100% record.

Maurice Kirya releases new song - Njagala Ggwe.

After Beera Naabo, many fans have been asking which later turned to demanding for a luganda song.  (They seem to have not got enough).  Maurice Kirya famously known foe his guitar skills has yet hit the air airwave with yet another Luganda track called “Njagala Gwe”.  He wrote the song himself and it was recorded at the First Love Studios by Fred Walusimbi commonly know as “Wallace” In a brief interview with the artist, he said that Njagala gwe is a love but very corny song. He continues to say that the song is about a guy who has made a total fool of himself and possessed by the girl’s ways.  Here he uses lyrics that are very honest.  He also talks of the simplicity in the lyrics which make it so beautiful and it also brings out the feel of live instrumentation like the guitars. An album will be coming out soon, we will let you know the dates soon.

Maurice Kirya and AY's Bina Damu

By Paul 'P-Tech' Mwandha

“Baagala alina, genda okole”, that's how the chorus of Maurice Kirya and AY's song, Bina damu, which was a number one two weeks ago on East Africa TV goes. The conception of this song was simple and not even they imagined that their one-minute creation would top the charts.

I asked Maurice how the idea for a colabo with the Tanzanian Swahili rap star came about and the explanation was as simple and as quick as the collaboration. Simply put, they recorded the day they met and this goes to show the level of professionalism and experience of both the artists and the producers.

Khal of Paparazzi, the guys that shot and produced AY's Yule and Nikupe (with Prezzo) videos one afternoon suggested to him that there is this top-notch Ugandan singer that he's got to colabo with. Khal then furnished him with Maurice's phone number and it was like clockwork, the two hooked up in a couple of hours at No End studios.

Apparently, not a single lyric had been written and there was no tune. You also have to bear in mind that AY was to leave Kampala for Daressalam with the track later that afternoon. Maurice started strumming away on his guitar as they both decided what they were going to write about.

When they both decided that they were going to write about youth and their productivity and hard work, AY started scribbling away with his ballpoint pen and wrote the verses there and then. Maurice easily conceptualized the chorus and they were ready to roll.

‘I did all my guitar in only three takes', Maurice adds. After Henry Kiwuwa, PAM Award nominee for best producer last year had done the initial mixing; the track was whisked away in its raw form to Master J in Bongo who did the final mastering.

AY soon came back to Kampala and shot the video with Khal and this helped take it to the top. After the success of this impromptu project, they are soon to conceive another colabo with probably the same formula.

AY has many hits in Bongo to his name and Maurice has a couple of releases to date. These include Beera Naabo, which is in Luganda and English, Lets go, which is typical American English RnB and Stop (original and remix) which earned him a nomination for best RnB artist in the PAM awards.

The Maurice Kirya Experience

After many months of silence, Maurice Kirya has finally stepped ou with "The Maurice Kirya Experience". The Maurice Kirya Experience is a musical journey that not only consists of Kirya performing, but also showcases great, unique, live performing artists from all over East Africa.

Waiting for Maurice Kirya to step out of his shadow - by Phoebe Mutetsi

I am a woman with quite a number of loves, many of them secret- almost all of them actually.  These loves are too secret; in fact, I don't dare reveal any to even myself. It's only too risky. Therefore, I walk around the streets in love like a zombie; bumping into this, knocking my head against that, sometimes it's hilarious, when it's not hurting.

Maurice Kirya Experience

The last Tuesday of the previous month Maurice Kirya fans were treated to what he described as an “Experience” and it was truly an experience. Fans were treated to various hits like “Beera Naabo, Boda Boda, Stop, Let’s go and many other songs that had most of us had never heard before.

He’s one artist who has stuck to one kind of music and instruments especially Guitars are his area of proficiency. We are talking about none other than Maurice Kirya who’s apparently slated to do a collaboration with Haitian sensation Wycliffe Jean.

Eavesdropping at his conversation with one of his friends, Maurice said he just can’t wait to sing with one of the biggest artist in the world.
“Can you believe I’m to do a collaboration with Wycliff Jean of the party to “Damascus artist” fame, arrangements are underway anytime soon just watch the space.” Kirya said.

1 on 1 with Maurice Kirya

Influenced by the beauty and unique spirit of his home, Uganda, Maurice Kirya’s music is an uncommon blend of soul, Afro, and R&B which he prefers to call ‘Mwooyo’ which means ‘soul.’ Introduced to music at an early age, Maurice’s mother would gather all of her children around the fire and teach them how to sing. Maurice started singing professionally at age 15, recording with popular Ugandan gospel, rap, and jazz artists Maurice has performed throughout Africa, and was the 2007 best R&B artist winner of the Pearl of African Music Awards in Uganda. He was also nominated at the Kisima Awards in Kenya and has worked with the legendary Mali musician, Moussa Diallo, Cecile Verny Quartet (Germany), Beniwe (Paris), First Love (Uganda), Pragmo (UG) and Kaz Kasozi(UG/UK).

Maurice makes us proud again by 1544c Ssejjombwe. (+256-782233273).

He surely ended last year on a high notch after winning the “Radio France International Awards” (RFIA) but 2011 looks even brighter for the Soul artist after he clinched two awards in the just concluded eWorld Music Awards.

Maurice Kirya last Saturday scooped the “World music and Indie/Progressive categories respectively beating off stiff competition from the rest of the nominees in the respective categories.

The Awards were created by the directors of the Golden Globes and the producers of film Independent Spirit Awards in Hollywood to celebrate cutting edge artists.

Now Maurice’s international stardom has kicked at a good start for he’s the only Ugandan artist ever to clinch three international Awards.

Maurice’s has been a soul artist from way back and many including his friends were despising him for doing that type of music in a country dominated by “Kidandali” but with his dedication and determination, he has now beaten the odds by becoming a force to reckon with in the industry.

Maurice’s “I will sing” and Rihanna’s California Dreaming by 1544c Ssejjombwe. (+256 782233273).

Just like others, I was shocked when I came across info that Rihanna plagiarized Maurice Kirya’s track “I will sing”.   Maurice’s song is off his Misubawa album and Rihanna has just released hers called “California dreaming”. The tempo, flow and instruments are the same in the two songs, making people believe Rihanna copied from Kirya. I would believe it’s by coincidence that the two songs are similar but who knows, Rihanna some explaining to do for Kirya’s track was the first one out. Maurice Kirya is due to launch his album next month at Serena Hotel with a long list of world music artists scheduled to curtain raise for the “soul” artist.

No Limits for Kirya's Music

Maurice Kirya's appeal does not know the usual limits that normally restrict music to a particular group or fan type, whether those be age, gender, geography, musical taste, e.t.c. He has represented Uganda on many international stages, the latest being the popular TV reality show Big Brother's stage in South Africa. He tellsAgather Atuhaire that his music tells him who he is.

Tell me about Maurice Kirya, the musician and the person.

I sort of live for the music and it is what I use to change the world into the colours I prefer. I started singing as a little kid with my brother and it's good to see that I have come so far!

Your music has changed over the past decade. Why is that?

Yes, my sound has gotten heavier and more mature. It was more acoustic and gentle in the early 2000's, today we record a full band. And since I'm grown now, my themes are more mature and make braver statements.

Maurice Kirya album review

Maurice Kirya is a cool guy. If you had asked me what I thought of him just a week ago though, I wouldn’t have had the same opinion. I’ve had the privilege to get to know him and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. And for this reason therefore, if his sophmore album “Book of Kirya” (Coming out 12th of October) had sucked, writing this review would have been infinitely harder. Thank my lucky stars then that it doesn’t. Suck that is. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I enjoyed the 14 track LP quite a bit. Book of Kirya opens with the afro-soul mission statement “Mulembe Gwa Kirya”. Everything that Maurice Kirya the artist is about is captured in the first four minutes of when you press play. It’s as if he’s saying, ‘At least now you can’t say I didn’t tell you’.
Next up is “If My Lungs Don’t Fail” where Maurice channels his inner Stevie Wonder. The production is lush and has a groove to it that had me snapping my fingers and tapping my feet. In this one he sings ‘If my lungs don’t fail me now/ I will walk on top of water/ if my lungs don’t fail me now/ I will paint your name in the wind”. and at the risk at of sounding like an idiot, as much as I love this song, I’m not quite sure to who or about who he’s talking about.
