Mickey Wine Firebase Minister of Information

Mention the word Firebase crew/government and what might immediately ring in your mind is its president Bobi Wine. However out of Fire base and making his steady rise in Uganda’s music ranks is the firebase Government’s newly appointed minister of information and baby brother to Bobi Wine. Excluding poise, fashion consciousness and delicate persona Mickey Wine is steadily ascending the dancehall charts with his hit track Kabadi (translated as stunt). It boasts of a  heavy resounding baseline that flows together with the song’s hook whenever the artist recites the chorus which is quite typical of the dream studio recording formula. We caught up with Mickey Wine for a low down.

Music Uganda: So how’s your music going?

Mickey Wine:  It’s going good man. I am only recording more and more as I anticipate the release of my album in a month’s time.

Mu: Take us through the songs.

MW: My very first song was recorded while I was studying form three. It was called “nyigidewo” (here I come),I Have “Nancy”, “Bunyuma n’goyambadde”, “Mickey Wine nzize”, “Be a man” where I featured with Bobi Wine and other various artists and the current “Kabadi.”

MU: Ehh and by the way what were you talking about on the song “Kabaddi”?

MW: Well I was trying to say today’s love and relationships are determined by financial security so I was calling upon people to work hard and be able to sustain their relationships.

MU: Who produces your records?

MW: I usually use Paddy Kayiwa, JJ Brian and Tony Howles. However in my free time we make beats with my Big brother Bobi Wine at home.

MU: So what’s your musical style?

MW: I am strictly a dancehall artist.

MU: So what CD have you been listening to in the recent past?

MW: I Listen to lots of dancehall artists like; Bennieman, Bonty Killer, Capleton etc.

MU: Besides recording music, what else do you do in your free time?

MW: I mostly rehearse and then also do boxing as a hobby.

MU: So are you dating?

MW: (nervously smiles) No, But I am searching for a respectful lady because I am a respectful guy too.

MU: What challenges have you faced through your musical journey?

MW: Securing radio airplay has been a major bottleneck so that’s why I want to create a powerful brand behind my music to guarantee me airplay.
