1 on 1 with Navio

My sister came home from her usual basketball games and all she could talk about was Navio’s outstanding performance. I almost wished she had recorded it from the tone of her voice, well she could not. Music Uganda brings you an insight on this young talented hip-hopper, who has become a centre of attraction in the musical, hip-hop scene. His luganda is not the best but when he does his thing…the rest is history.

Navio who came to be noticed under the umbrella of Klear Kut (still under that umbrella) is 6ft 3 weighs about 97kg, born Lubwama Daniel Kigozi, studied in Kenya St Andrew Turi (Better at Swahili than Luganda). Navio; the name he came up with before he even got to know the meaning. He came up with the name at DV8 with the original crew of Klear Kut that consisted of 11 guys. Mitch was the MC then asked for the name of the group name, he immediately decided that Navio would be his name and KK would be the group.

About Klear Kut

Klear Kut still exists and Navio is still a member of the group. He says its like a tree under an unmbrella. Like a tree there are several branches. The various members of Klear Kut are working on solo projects right now and will soon be getting back together for a reuniting project in 2010 after everyone is done with their solo projects. There is also a girls hip-hop group in the making called Echo (twins). Right now they are in studio and it will be releasing their songs soon.

The Projects

Tha Mith – The week of September
Papito – CV – Released in 2007 and launched in Rwanda
Navio – Half the Legend – To be launched on the 5th June 2009.
Langman – He is German, just got married and he is releasing music underground.
GB – Releasing mix tapes.
In addition to the projects, Klear Kut has another member, Unique. He joined in 2008. Navio describes him as a jack of all trends. He both sings and raps.

About Navio

In 2007, the whole of Klear Kut decided as a group that they should try and experiment with solo careers. They had released three successful albums together, right now individual interpretation of a song is what the fans want.  Navio has been working on his solo career since March last year.  Because of the busy school programme, he would only do music in the holidays. During the holidays he has done collabos like Burrrn with  Blu 3, Rakus with Peter Miles & Menshan, Tell Me with Michael Ross, Bad Man from Kamwokya with Bobi Wine and many more. We must accept the all collabos have turned into instant hits.

Future Plans

Navio is planning to launch his album on the 5th June 2009 at Kati Kati. The album includes collabos from artists like Juacali, Kid Fox, 2Face, Peter Miles & Menshan, Vamposs, Tha Mith, Maurice Kirya, GNL and Bobi Wine. It includes songs like; Salooni, Bugumu, Otyo, Bad man from Kamwokya and many more. After his launch Navio is yet to start his East African tour in cities like Nairobi, Dar-es-Salam, Rwanda, Burundi

The current hip-hop industry

For years the hip-hop sector of the music industry was not getting enough appreciation, thus there were not enough hip-hop artists to create enough competition. GNL for example who is one of the biggest artists around had no platform, now the artists have increased, hip hop is being appreciated thus creating healthy competition.

A lot of the rappers that are coming up try and elevate themselves with the past, the new school should stay  new school and respect the old school “Like a lot of people screaming PTECH and associate themselves to boaster themselves, that strongly annoys me” says Navio. Navio continues to say that people should stop thinking that the Luga-flow and the Englisg will end up butting heads. There is no beef between the two and if it does exist, its just two people who are creating it, other than that they are cool. “I love hip-hop to try and divide it right now.

It’s half the Legend for Navio By Isaac Ssejjombwe

“Welcome to the superstar’s world” were the words Bobi Wine told Navio at Kati Kati last Friday amidst a mammoth crowd that came to support the hip hop artist for his first ever album launch HALF THE LEGEND.

The show that was slated to begin at 7pm was delayed due to unavoidable circumstance and began at 11pm with Navio in black outfits performing Bugumu, when a girl steals your heart, Ngalo before calling on the Myth, Juliana and Papito who last made appearance on the Ugandan music scene two years ago to do their blockbuster All I wanna Know.

Navio Gets Raw

It's why I did raw... I'm competing with the big boys now... Goodbye! - By Peter Allen Kigonya

I remember the first time we interviewed Klear Kut here on UGPulse, one of the first Entertainment interviews on UGPulse - and definitely the most ambitious article for our young site at the time. I remember when Jane came to me to publish the interview. A lot of the musicians we were interviewing were unknown to us in the Diaspora but this one was an interesting challenge because it consisted of an exciting group of Ugandan college kids on different continents. Papito in Kampala, Langman (or the several names he called himself) in Malta, The Mith in India, JB in the United States and Navio in South Africa.

Navio takes hip hop concerts to a new level

On Saturday January 29th, 2011 Ugandan hip hop sensation Navio had a concert called the Nawuliranga (I Will Always Listen) Concert at the UMA Showgrounds in Kampala, Uganda.  Navio’s event set a new standard for hip hop shows in Africa.  The show featured amazing production that included a massive multi leveled stage, fascinating lights, lazers, back drop led screens with stunning visuals, pyrotechnics and special effects provided by Fenon Entertainment.  The well attended event was managed by Talent 256 International who also are the management company for Navio.

Friday, February 11th 2011

“Nawuliranga concert” by 1544c Ssejjombwe. (+256-782233273)

With Fenon behind the stage, lighting and sound, Talent 256 running the concert, Airtel Uganda sponsoring the event, Zambia’s JK and Kenya’s Amani as curtain raisers and Navio behind the microphone, the “Nawulilanga” concert can best be described as a successful event.

With a considerable turn up at UMA Hall in lugogo, Navio’s concert kicked off at 9pm with Jackie and Lillian first on the performance list.
Kenya’s Amani and Zambia’s JK whom Navio features along with on the “Hands across the world” track followed suit, firing up the crowd by their energetic performances and exuberant dance strokes.

The main act clad in black jeans, superman red t-shirt and sneakers, performed “African Hustler, Bugumu, Raw and Burn” for his first session before returning in his trade-mark Kanzu to perform “Nawulilanga, Nze Akwagala alongside Uniq, Hello Girl with Maurice Kirya, Nekolera Gyange, Hustler’s night together with Don Mc, Keko and Enigma and finishing off with Boss Vawo”.

In a white suit and black shoes, the artist returned on stage with JB and Myth and performed their “All I wanna know track, Lighter along with TickTah and Number one” with Michael Ross who together with his dance crew pulled strokes that corresponded with the moves on the eight-by-three projector screens.

The African Hustler later on sampled Mr. Dj, Whistle song, Bad Man from Kamwokya, Murder of the crows, Otyo before Don Mc and Myth battled it out in free style.

“Tulimukintu, Ngalo and hands across the world” alongside JK and Amani were Navio’s last track of the night.

Navio at number three on MTV Base by 1544c Ssejjombwe. (+256 782233273)

Daniel Kigozi alias Navio is perhaps the best Hip Hop artist in the region going by his hot collaborations in the industry if tracks like “Stuttering” and “hands across the world” are anything to go by.

Navio alongside 8 African countries teamed up with R.Kelly and produced “Hands across the world” track that has gone ahead to top charts on the continent.

Just after that, Fefe Dobson from the US approached Navio to remix “Stuttering” which has branded Navio as one of Africa’s best artists. Straight from all that, Navio flew down to South Africa to shoot the video of his “Move forward” track but little did he know it would climb African charts at such short notice.

The track as we speak, climbed five places from number ten to number five in three days and just last Saturday, the ratings had placed the track to number three with Cabo Snoop’s “Prakatatumba” and “what’s my name” by Rihana and Drake taking peak positions .

If by any chance, Navio’s track climbs to number one, he will become the first Ugandan ever to top the play list on Africa’s most watched channel. Great things surely come to those who have worked for them and certainly Navio is one of them. Way to go “hustler”.

Scuffle as Navio unveils “Keep Moving” by 1544c ssejjombwe. (+256 782233273).

Time check was 3.00am when Klear Kut’s JB knocked out Atlas during Navio's   " Keep moving" video unveiling at club Rouge last Friday.

It all started in a verbal disagreement which later escalated to a fist fight but info has it that JB who was a bit under the influence of alcohol was warning Atlas to rest his case against Navio.

Chaos ensued after JB's punch and it took the bouncers and other revelers several minutes to separate Jah, Atlas, Navio and Jb who were at each others throats.

It should be known that Navio and Atlas are not the best of friends since they are both doing the same genre of music and belonging to the same record label: Talent Africa.

Besides that, it was a great unveiling which saw patrons fill the club as early as 9pm even though the show started no later than midnight with Klear Kut members including Navio, JB, Myth, Unique perform for an energetic crowd before Platinum’s Don Mc and Swangz Avenue’s Benon.

Bobi Wine, Vampos, Michael Ross, Swangz Ave team, Atlas, Sheeba, Talent Africa and many more were also among the spectators at the event that ended in the wee hours of the morning.

Navio’s "Keep Moving" release party

Last Friday Navio hosted a party at rouge called the keep moving party. Rouge was packed to capacity by 10pm as Navio officially released his latest single called keep moving.  Keep moving was recorded at Swangz Avenue and also features Swangz avenue executive producer/CEO Benon on the track. The video was shot in South Africa by tough Sunday productions.  The video production is of international standards and cost over 25 million Uganda shillings to shoot.  Keep moving is a great follow up to raw which got massive international airplay in 2010.  Keep moving has been playing exclusively on MTV base for the last month and has moved up the MTV charts and is currently at number 2.  It has now been released to local TV stations. The keep moving party also featured performances by the Klear Kut, Mith, JB, Don Mc, Benon and Navio.  Look out for the keep moving song and video which is now officially released.

The escalating beef between Navio and Atlas by 1544c Ssejjombwe. (+256 782233273).

Navio is perhaps the best Hip Hop artist in the country apparently while Atlas is one Hip Hop artist to give the rest a run for their money with his talent but the two artists are totally on different pages despite being managed by the same record label.
A few weeks back, one of the Klear Kut founder members attacked Atlas during Navio’s ‘Keep moving’ video unveiling at Club Rouge and since then, the two camps no longer pass as friends.
The beef, we are told started when Atlas and Navio attacked each other in their respective verses on the ‘UG Swag’ track produced by Just Jose.
Atlas then went to his producer Nick Punk and recorded ‘Nothing on me’ with most of the lines directly going to Navio.

In response, Navio also decided to answer back with ‘Ddayo Ku kyeyo’, which he recorded from Swangz Avenue with Just Jose behind the beats.‘Talent Africa’ manages both artists and its through the same record label that Navio was chosen to represent the country in the ONE8 project that saw him alongside 7 other African artists teaming up with R.Kelly on the ‘Hands Across the world’ track.

Navio releases Kata

This is truly the most complete video of 2012-2013! Navio represents his Ugandan culture, fusing Hip-Hop with traditional African rhythms, whilst still staying true to his lyrical battle upbringing. What started as a Ugandan street dance, has now been given voice in this latest video "Kata". This video goes leaps and bounds past anything ever done by a Ugandan artist in terms of concept and execution, showing that it isn't the camera you use, but rather the concept and star quality that make your video worthwhile! Welcome to the "Kata" Universe!

The Lyrics were written by Navio, including all the back up vocals. Production was by Aethan. With Samurae recording the song at Talent Africa studios. The word Kata is old school swahili for letting loose and dancing. The track is about not trying to hard, not trying to be hardcore, super lyrical or pretend. Just about having a blast and enjoying the good times.

Over in Africa Navio has built up a Hip Hop Industry where none existed  becoming the most Award winning urban artist of all time in his country.  A collaboration with two legends of this magnitude is bound to take so many charts, on so many continents by storm. Bringing together the Godfather of R&B with the Godfather of Ugaflow on one legendary track to usher in a new wave of inter-continental collaboration. Navio has done several collaborations with big names from the likes of R-Kelly, to West African Acts like 2Face and Sarkodie. However, this collaboration carries special weight, as Keith Sweat will be in Uganda in a month’s time to put on one of the biggest shows Kampala has ever seen. Living up to his name as the ‘African Hustler’, Navio will be flying back to Atlanta for two days to wrap up scenes from their video, which should be done within the next two weeks. The song is called “On and On” produced by Major 7, a fresh new talent on the American scene. The song will be engineered by one of America’s top engineering teams. They recorded the song at Keith’s personal studio on one of his Atlanta properties. Navio steps away from his battle roots once again, in association with Navcorp and Encore Music Group, to bring you the classiest, sexiest collaboration of the year- alongside the Legend that is Keith Sweat: “On and On”.

Navio features on Kat Dahlia remix “Clock strikes 12”

"Clock Strikes 12" is off  her forthcoming album "My Garden", produced by Salaam Remi. This remix features Ugandan superstar rapper Navio. Was  recorded and mixed by Samurae at Talent Africa Music Studio. Dahlia was raised by Cuban-born parents in Miami Beach, Florida, and began rapping at the age of eight and writing songs at fifteen, ripping instrumentals from YouTube in lieu of a band.  At eighteen, after saving money from waitressing jobs, Dahlia decided to leave Miami, and moved to New York City a month later "on a whim." Shortly thereafter, Dahlia became involved in what she describes as a "toxic relationship," which she would later come to regard as a source of inspiration and "writer's gold."

Navio featuring Joanita Kawalya

Komawo Press Release

Afrigo Band has been at the pinnacle of the Ugandan music industry. Klear Kut were amongst the founders of Ugandan Hip Hop (UGAFLOW) and the move to take it continental.
Joanita Kawalya's voice helped to shape all of Uganda's popular music whilst Navio has set unprecedented continental head-way in a genre that was seen as strictly underground.
These two forces coming together could not become another club song. It had to mean more. On the song Navio's lyrics trace his story thus far, whilst touching on several Ugandan issues at large. Joanita lends a re-assuring hand to Navio on the song. Assuring him where his true home is and not to be misled too far from outside influences. This is a song that is needed in Uganda socially, as many people in this generation have been displaced. Their roots are Ugandan but God's plan and fate have put them in spheres that make it hard to identify. "Komawo" encapsulates that attempt to connect and show respect for ones own culture. Whilst Joanita takes an open and realistic stance not often seen by others in her generation. That of complete acceptance for those that would take the time to re-connect. This is by and large one of the best Ugandan Songs of all time.

No Holding Back - Navio ft Stephanie Ming

Navio for this next single had to take it one step beyond. His last collaboration was produced by Major 7 (who recently produced Rick Ross and Jay-Z’s latest single “Devil is a Lie”) and featured the legendary crooner Keith Sweat. So the producer TM88 from the 808 Mafia (which is a group of producers including Lex Luger) was the next logical choice. TM88 has produced for Nicki Minaj, Ace Hood and Gucci Mane but to name a few. So Navio got him on-board to knock out a world class beat for Navio fans. The track was Recorded and Engineered in Atlanta by Kid Class who has worked with everyone from Ashanti to Mase, putting the track miles ahead of a lot of product coming out in Africa right now. It is truly what fans of Navio’s International music have been waiting for. The sultry vocals of Stephanie Ming are the cherry on top of what is to be one of the biggest Hip Hop songs of the Year. She features in the video alongside cameos from Akon’s DJ Benny D and Ken from Swahili Nation, which is set to come out on the 21st of March. It is a raw Hip Hop love song with a street edge that is synonymous with all of Navio’s International singles.
