PAUL ASHLEY KATO LWANGA

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Paul Kato Lwanga is a talented artiste that is not new to the Ugandan music scene. He is a down to earth, simple human being and he loves sharing every experience so others can learn from them

Paul's dad was a footballer ( Once Golden Golie of Africa" and he also loved art and music. With all this started up a home choir and he (his dad) played piano. The choir was called Little Angels - by this time Paul was 4yrs. With his father's help Paul learnt how to arrange harmonie and this groomed him musically. In Primary seven, around 12yrs old he joined the school choir and started applying the lessons he learnt at home a school.

As early as 1994’ he had started singing as part of an info-tainment group called “House Lane B” that used to perform in different schools promoting reproductive health and AIDS Awareness, sponsored by USAID under DISH Project.

The exposure he got during this period led him to join six other budding musicians from different churches in Kampala to form a Gospel group “Evolution” in 2002.  The group staged shows in churches, universities and even got opportunities to perform with other established groups like First Love and Klear Kut.

In 2003, Paul became the Assistant Music Director at Kansanga Miracle Centre, a post he held for one and a half years.  This played an important role in his career because it built his vocal training skills.  One of his major responsibilities was selecting songs to be performed by the choir every Sunday and he also had to train the choir.  He also linked up with two other youth from the same church to form a group that provided entertainment at weddings and other such functions.  With this group he started another chapter in his musical career – background vocalist.

Between 2003 and 2006, Paul Lwanga has backed up reknown artists like Tony Bradley (A South African gospel Artist), Iryn Namubiru, Maurice Kirya, Winston Mayanja, Juliana Kanyomozi, Jaqee (A Swedish Based Ugandan Soul artiste), Kawessa and many more.

He has done vocal training for artists like Maurice Kirya and Sweet Kid as well as doing studio back-ups.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Paul has had many achievements musically but none is more outstanding than his involvement in the Tusker Project Fame reality TV show that has recently just ended in December, 2006.  This was the first ever locally produced East African reality TV show and it was aimed at promoting and developing local raw talent.  It attracted thousands of hopeful artistes and when the auditions were done Paul was one of the 14 only students
who were selected to join the academy.  Of these only 3 were Ugandans and he was the last Ugandan to leave the Academy on 2nd December 2006, having survived the weekly evictions that had ran all the way from October 29th, 2006.

Despite not being the eventual winner, Tusker Project Fame gave the artiste a platform to launch his career because of the exposure he got.  He also grew as a musician in the academy because: like all other students, he was trained daily in performance, dance, song writing, production, image building and the like by highly skilled trainers like Tedd Josiah (Nairobi Music Producer), Achieng Abura, Regina.
