Peter Miles Ascends
Like word goes sky is always the Limit However in the meantime all seems to be going as programmed for two time Pearl of Africa music awards Dancehall artist of the year Peter Miles. When I met him for the interview I Joked that this year he might as well add the name “award” to Peter Miles to which he burst out laughing.
The C.E.O of his home based Roadblock records is still basking in the recent glory of winning a continental award for best Ragga Dancehall video for his “Wicked” riddim Love whose graphics, exquisite lighting and ear friendly rhythm was good enough to convince the award judges into giving him a well deserved award. Wait a minute as he was still dealing with that triumph another award came by he was voted PAM award ragga artist of the year to which many are not complaining considering that he’s the only Ugandan artist that has painstakingly stuck to the dancehall basics.
The year 2007 has been a hectic one for Peter. He’s divided it between doing tours globally like the massive G8 Concert in Germany against Poverty where he shared the stage with stars like Mariah Careh, Youssou Ndou, Bonno and others, promotions and recording more hits. He recently returned from the UK where he put up an energetic performance for the crowd there. When rolling with Peter Miles you can’t help but notice the pressure he goes through on a daily basis. He’s phone rings off the hook from business connoisseurs, fans and of course stalkers. School kids stop and whisper “that is peter Miles” You can tell they really want to get close to him but perhaps don’t know which strategy to use. The bold ones move on to ask for autographs which Peter readily avails with a cautious smile.
Don’t Let the smile Fool you However, when it gets to business he handles his own and you can tell from the technicality he uses you discuss business on his cell. He still cuts the Fresh Urbane sophisticated personality Donning Dark Blue denims, a Tight black fitting t-shirt, snow white trainers and his trademark ice (Bling Bling) on his Fingers and around the neck. He recently purchased his Dream car an M class Mercedes Benz on his recent visit to the UK ,and over a drink the Road block records entrepreneur gave me the Low Down.

MU; Hey Miles you have recently been winning numerous awards do we see you relaxing musically?
Miles: No man! Actually I have Just completed three new projects. A song “Ensi Eno” for the Local Market. It basically stresses the fact that Not all Glitters is Gold. You see sometimes what you think people are isn’t usually sometimes even the Rich are quite unhappy. It’s a reggae dancehall tune. Another is “African child” that I did for the world market. It talks about The suffering African Child at the hands of unfair people in power who most times embezzle funds meant for the African child’s needs. It’s Riddim was sent to me by Out Here records in Germany my music distributors in Europe. The Other one is “Destiny” a positive inspirational vibe that stresses following one’s destiny no matter the distractions there is.
MU: How come this time we don’t see you featuring your Long time Cohort Mr.Menshan?
Miles: Well I do the music according to the situation at hand. Well, when I did these projects I felt like I needed to say something from my heart .However, Mr.Menshan will come on other projects still. We are still mashing up places with him.
MU: How has the year been generally for you?
Miles: Better than the last. I’ve done tours internationally and locally ,I have recorded more videos and I am also glad that my music is down even in the country. It’s a great feeling.

MU: Radio usually makes many artists. What has been their reaction to your music?
Miles: Well at first it was a struggle breaking through to radio with my style. However, am glad to report that right now at least they can recognize and rotate the riddims. And now with the visual revolution it’s quite easy to breakthrough even with minimal radio attention.
MU: What is your happiest point of recording music?
Miles: When I play back the first part of what I just recorded.
MU: And what accessories do you usually have during a recording session.
Miles: It’s usually a Pen and Paper.
MU: As C.E.O of your own road Block records, tell us where you see it going.
Miles: Well for now it’s an own thing that I use to weave my own beats and sound. However I have also worked with a couple of artists Like Kid Fox, Jenkins Mukasa and Crystal Fabulous.
MU: What’s the plan for this season?
Miles: It’s basically more shows. It’s a busy season for me.
MU: Hey by the way do you write all your songs and how long does it take you record a song?
Miles: Yes I do and with concentration I can record a song in half an hour but it also depends on my mood at the time.
MU: Tell me about any of your music struggles?
Miles: Like I told you breaking out with my dancehall style was tricky. Only a bunch of radio stations were receptive of my music, some only became receptive after seeing the other things I was doing. I also remember being handcuffed by police in Nairobi. This was all on the road to recording my first projects. Nothing comes easy man
MU: What’s your favorite drink?
Miles: (Laughs) I love Juice especially the strawberry flavor.
MU: Favorite colors
Miles: I am down for White, Black, Red yellow and the green call them the Rasta colors.
MU: What’s your favorite cologne?
Miles: Givenchy.
MU: What’s your daily Philosophy?
Miles: I take each day as it comes.
When you Listen to Miles’ three new songs “Ensi Eno, African child” and “Destiny” you can easily sniff the concetration with which Miles puts to his music his flows are flawless and quite effortless and with a clear past track record I guess the fans can’t wait for what he has to offer this time. I predict Destiny as the one hit that will keep girls and boys on Discotheque dance flows. A Peter Miles compilation compact Disc is worth having on your Living room Shelf.
