Meet Ragga Ben

Most of the time in the Ugandan music industry, when a song goes down well with the people and hits big, most of the time many will think the artist responsible for the song is perhaps new on the block which is not seldom the case as many for whom such happens have been at it for a while but perhaps they were not applying the right formula for the Ugandan audience which most times is down for mysterious songs that could be interpreted to mean the opposite. One such artist in the flamboyant Ragga Ben, though he’d been recording music since the year 2001, it was only in the year 2007 that his star really shone high, thanks to his mind tickling Gear Lever yes a vehicle’s gear lever a song on which the artist was asking the ladies that “who’s got their Gear Lever?” Definitely the artist pompously answered that he was the one with it. A feature which mostly endeared him to female afro-beat fans allover the country who felt like “damn this guy is truly being our friend” Indeed gear lever so him making numerous country stopovers to places as far as Sudan where in was a major chartbuster both on radio and in the club.

Ragga Ben currently has two albums to his name since 2001,the first was titled Angelina and had tracks such as; Omukwano Gwesuubi, Nantongo, Weekend, Gwe weak, Bwaba Akusabye which he recorded at TVR Records with producer Kiiwa. He then followed it up with his much acclaimed 2nd album Gear Lever which had songs like Namboze, Nkolela Mukyala, Mubigule, Juliana and Money money. He recorded this at the Mengo based Savior records under the watchful eye of producers Deo and Timo.

He is currently putting final touches to his latest album titled Wesotinge that he’s recording at Savior records and features Baby Shilla, one of the song’s Boot is already receiving ample rotation especially in the dance clubs allover the country. It’s a poetic tale of a male that’s madly possessed by the beauty of his ladies “booty’ so he goes on and worships her like a small god. The album also boasts of the song Kiwede. He’s performed at major crowd pulling shows such as; Radio Simba’s Ekigunda Kyomwaka, The East African carnival and major brand promotion shows allover the country. The self confessed “ladies man”(most of his tracks are in praise of the woman)says he’s major challenge right now is finding a major internationally promoter because he’d like to spread  his message to all parts of the globe especially for the Ugandans living allover the globe he asserts. Ragga Ben is not only stopping at making records he’s spreading his artistic mantra to the silver screen as well, he can currently be seen acting as the ruthless Bukuku the Gateman in the Engineer Katerega directed classic movie King Isaza a legendary tale that dates ten thousand years ago. The movie is an ancient tale of what Africans thought about earthquakes. Well to them it was one of the earth’s forces laughing their day off (long story if you recall…you perhaps need to watch it). He’s also a radio show host of the daily evening drive show (Lugenzi Lutya) at the national Magic FM where he makes thunderous comic banter for evening drive home travelers stuck somewhere in a Jam. Before hitting any stage show, you’ll he’ll sip some water and wine.

He’ll laugh at anything comic and loves to joke with friends in his free time and is seldom disappointed with anything that doesn’t go he’s way. He’s also impatient with lazy persons he confesses. On the whole Ragga Ben can be summarized as an energetic performer, an extremely shrewd personality when it comes to business matters, effortlessly humorous and yet easily approachable plus speaking of records if you are into music that poetically portrays near fantasies then you perhaps need to look for his compact disc.
