Rocky Giant

Rocky has followed up on his Rafiki release with 'Gwa baras' which is precise fusion of Contemporary Ugandan ragga and Hip-hop music. This is a phenomenon that has helped to establish him as one of the top upcoming artistes. His previous release 'Rafiki' is already very popular in the UK. Most people that have listened to his work say he may just be Uganda's future star.

Rocky Giant is following in the footsteps of Bataka Underground and Sylvester & Abrams with his neat and precise Luganda rap delivery. He goes and extra step and spits his bars in Swahili on Ugandan dancehall beats as well.

In his words...
I am Rocky Giant a.k.a Giriya Fred. My origins are in West Nile, but I was born in Central Buganda. I speak more Luganda than my mother tongue just because I grew up in Buganda.
I was born on 21st Jan 1984 and when I was six years old, I lost both my parents. So from six years on, I started facing the difficulties of this world. I had my elder Brothers but they were too young to cater for me, so every one had to find a way of surviving by himself.
I came to Kampala in 1992 and got a friend whom I stayed with for quite some time and for sure, he was like a brother to me. This friend of mine gave me the parental care and guidance that I had never had. While staying him, I got a chance of going to school, being sponsored by Kampala Diocese.
1993 was, when I was in primary three was when I joined the Music scene. I first started by going to the Church Choir and I was of the best actors. I knew how to play the entire local instruments and was hence elected as Entertainment Prefect.
I had so many friends when in school as I became popular and they encouraged me to the extent that I was almost forgetting that I was an orphan.
In 1996, I remember very vividly my fast time to perform on stage doing an act in a dancehall style but I still did not know what I was doing because I was not used to the Microphone. Those days, I was singing offbeat and off-key. But still, I did not loose hope. I kept on performing when I was given the chance and sometimes, I was denied a chance but they say practice makes perfect.
I used to admire artistes and I would wish I was the one doing the same staff, some of these were Shanks Vividie and Winstone Mayanja and the songs they sang (Ndabye okwe gayirira and one Kilometer respectively)

Those songs had good rhythms and they really inspired me to take music as my last resort. But still I could not do their style because their style was difficult to me.
Later, the group that gave me a lot of inspiration was Bataka Underground. I liked their style the way they rhymed was a new staff to my ears. So I went on practicing the Hip Hop style getting Ideas from their songs and their performance.
Am now where I am now. I nevertheless don’t do music for Uganda as a country, but I do music for East Africa because I understand E.A is like one country now. That is why I mix Luganda and Swahili to share the Idea of the message.
The Album will soon be out and it will be titled ‘Rafiki’ meaning Friendship after my debut single because I understand music is all about friendship.
To all Musicians let us love one another instead of hating each other.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL
