Seba Mamba, voice in the desert

Many Ugandans who have been here for some time will remember the song, Sexy Black Mamba. It has an unforgettable beat that takes one back to the days of their childhood, when life was gay. The song stuck in our memories even when it soon faded from our radios. It comes off the first album of a group of visionaries with a burning message.
The voice and brains behind that tune is Seba Mamba. He wrote the song from the very depths of his heart and it not surprising that it still resonates in the hearts of many. The Mamba is supposed to be friendly to little children and even with the scary stories surrounding it, it is just part of nature and if we look at it from that context, we could see its good attributes.
Seba Mamba is really Daudi Sebanyiga. He has played music almost all his life. He does not remember a time when he did not play. As a kid, he always waited for the night so he could do his favourite pass time, drumming. At night, there is no interruption from the day today noise of people trying to do their business. He had a favourite tree, on top of which he would sit for hours on end and drum away.
Seba Mamba still drums. His chosen style is Reggae and he is proud of it. He has gone to many places and he never forgets his gospel. He is a Reggae preacher who is out on a mission. He believes that if the world and Africa in general is to come out of the doldrums, they must respect all the good things that our ancestors cherished. That is the only way we shall triumph.
This star has played with a wide variety of musicians. Reggae has brought different people into his world. He has played with artists from the Caribbean and from Europe. He met most of his compatriots while in exile in Germany. He is not very comfortable about talking about that part of his life but he believes that for all the pain that exile brought him, he achieved something a lot more worthy.
He lived with Africans in Germany and in their commune, they started the band. Todate, Sexy Black Mamba is the biggest hit on this first album. At the moment, Seba Mamba is in the process of completing a second project, which will hit the radio any time. He believes this new project will be even bigger than anything he has ever worked on, given the dedication that was poured in.
At the moment, Seba Mamba’s parents are his biggest supporters. He lives home on the family ranch but this gives him time to work on his music and get in touch with his inner self. He believes music should be more about responsibility than fame. It does not help to have great sounding tunes if they are useless to the listeners, if they cannot change their lives.
About his music, he believes that his music is world music, written for the whole world because it takes every one back to the basics of what is important in life. His music is rooted in Rasta. Rasta is an organisation under the spirit of Africans the world over. The stereotype that Rasta is a rebel group is wrong. It is an international brotherhood that will always accept those who are oppressed.
Seba Mamba is deeply religious and he is soon going gospel. He believes that he can more effectively push his message through gospel music. He will also still sing against social injustice, though. |
