MORE ABOUT THEM
Urban Life is a group of four young talented and dedicated MCs
who recently released their debut track, 'Nothing Compares'
featuring calm-voiced Rita Sabiiti and produced by Moses 'MMC'
Sabiiti together with Dawudi who did the final mix-down at Bava
Studios. Uganda's Hip-hop scene is definitely getting the
attention it deserves.
This
is how it all started. Urban Life, formally Urban Thugs was a
group of guys who used to hang in Ntinda, a Kampala suburb and
liked listening to hip-hop music. It was from there that they
built and developed their writing and rhyming skills that earned
them their a.k.a tittles, which I'll give you in a sec:
The first of the four members is Lyrical G. His homies liked to
call him 'Lyrical' because he is very wordy in speech and is
always coming up with new rhymes. He is formally from the group
'Bataka Underground', which he left for personal reasons.
Then we have C-Swift. He is known for having 'swift rhyming
skills' as his name suggests. His rhyming style is very stylish,
reassuring and also based on his personal experiences. It for
this reason that his verses touches people's hearts.
Krucked is another member of the
group. He is very tall….6ft something and his style is what I
would describe as 'unplugged' or 'crooked' as he brings out the
realistically tough perspective to every story that other MCs
may have ignored.
Urban
Life would not be complete without Exquisite. His style is
smooth and laid back and sometimes sings lines in his verses.
His lyrical skills are just as good as those of other members of
the group, which makes me maintain my personal opinion that
these are probably the best MCs in East Africa.
Their debut track also features a verse by Minus One, one of
their homies from The Basement in Ntinda. As his name suggests,
his voice is the deepest in the entire Basement crew that Urban
Life falls under.
You have all heard of Kleat Kut, one of the latest Hip-hop
sensations in East Africa. Well, Urban has an arrangement with
Klear Kut called The Cipher. This is a brainchild of Dawudi and
a couple of other producers. Don't be surprised when you see
them on the same project in the near future.
Urban Life had a very humble beginning. The journey to their
first project begun with the Chain Thought Crew. Both Urban Life
and Chain Thought Reaction were auditioning for the Sanyu FM
talent search show, which was held late last year. It was then
that they hooked up and Chain Thought Crew who arranged for
Urban a semi-professional track called 'Super Lyrical'. Urban
utilised the track and managed to win 500,000 shillings for
having the best act for the day.
The
reward wasn't given to them in cash but in kind. Sanyu FM
secured for Urban a deal to record 'Nothing Compares' at the
ultra modern Bava Studios under the guidance of some of the best
and youthful producers we have here. Rita did a very good job
with the guitar and instantly turned the track to gold. The
track was taken 'back home' to sanyu and given a mini launch
after a long interview. It gets airplay every now and then on
the radio station and is paving the way for more tracks on their
album which are yet to be recorded.
Nothing compares is selling like hot cake among Kenyan hip-hop
lovers where C-Swift is getting some quality college education.
