Hair

Hair is your most important accessory, as my dad used to say, “Your hair is your crowning glory” and without the influence of countless fashion magazines he had the right idea all along, (don’t you just hate it when your parents are right?
In this edition of Fashion Victim I’ve combed the fashion mags and the fashion websites to bring you the trendiest looks for hair this S/S.
I will also take you step by step on how to achieve the looks and give you some tried and tested advice on hair products, outlets and salons.

LONG HAIR
Long hair is incredibly easy to maintain once you have the right styling products.
The basics are:

  • Spray sheen, I recommend Motions for its lovely scent and effectiveness.
  • A satin/silk head wrapper for bedtime.
  • Conditioning hair oil.
  • Hair pins.

Tousled Waves

Step 1: Weave in 14/16 inch straight human hair weave
Step 2: Thin out towards the ends with thinning scissors to achieve the natural look.
Step 3: Towel-dry hair and spray sections with a volume-boosting product e.g volume boost mousse, placenta etc
Step 4:  Dry naturally.

Modern Up do

Step 1: Weave in 14/16 inch human hair weave
Step 2: Thin out with thinning scissors to achieve the natural look.
Step 3: The third step depends on the hair type. For wavy or thick hair, I'd add two parts gel to one part curl-enhancing moisturizing cream e.g D&L beautiful beginnings detangling cream, or any type of pink oil to control the texture, then dry naturally or with a diffuser on a low setting. For straighter or finer hair, add texture and substance by applying a volumising foam/mousse, then dry hair upside down on medium heat (high heat deflates volume).
Step 4: twist sections of your hair lightly, carelessly, pin them up to maintain all the twists, hold them up (like a pony tail) towards the top of your head. Clasp them up like a puff.

Mod Headband

Step 1: After towel-drying hair, blow dry with a round brush going back and slightly upwards for maximum volume.
Step 2: Hold with band.

MEDIUM

Medium hair is always best when its cut into a REAL hairstyle, I once had my hair cut by Stephen of Imagine Salon in Pioneer Mall and he gave me the most versatile style of my life, it was not layered but rather sectioned. Visit Stephen and ask him to give you a haircut that will give your hair volume and sit back and prepare for satisfaction.

Blunt Bob

This is a simple enough hair cut that suits a cat face. It works well for an official and a casual hairstyle. Always take a picture to the salon when you want to get a new hair cut.

Sleek Ponytail

The sleek Pony can be achieved with both long and medium hair lengths.
It you have a weave in make sure that enough hair on the front, sides and back are left free so that when you hold the hair up none of your weave tracks show.
Step 1:  Spray water or leave in moisturizer on the top, front of your head.
Step2: Rub a little gel on your palms and spread evenly on top.
Step 3:  Use a fine toothed comb to drag the hair into place. A part down the middle is optional (especially when you have a weave)
Step 4: Fasten the ponytail with a funky clip.

SHORT

Being someone who has had very long hair and also been bald I can confess that its easier to keep long hair rather than short hair. Short hair more than likely requires you to always have 2 bottles of expensive shampoo in your bathroom at all times because you will need to wash your hair daily. You also need deep penetrating conditioner e.g Motions,  Hair mayonnaise, Pantene conditioner and lots of wet styling gels and hair oils.
Here is a style that will help reduce on your hair styling load.

The Halle

Step1: Relax your hair so it is completely straight.
Step 2: Cut into the style while the hair is wet.
Step 3: Dry, add moisturizer to protect your hair from heat styling.
Step 4:  Flip tong.

HAIR TIPS

  • Do not be afraid to stop your stylist and ask questions or refuse to use certain products, it’s YOUR hair and YOUR paying for the service, so be a bitch.
  • Always get a professional to cut your hair.
  • Always ask your stylist how you can maintain the look before you embark on a new look.
  • Look for alcohol in your hair products. DO NOT use products with alcohol in your hair.  Keep a keen eye out for alcohol in mousse, spray, spritz and gel. Your hair will dry out and break with repeated use of these products.
  • Always take a picture of the new style you want.
  • If your hair is long and straight/straight-ish, wrap the hair around your head, pin into place and cover it with a silk/satin head wrap before bed.
