Lyrical G completes new album
Two-time Pam award Hip-hop artist of the year is hard to find, this because of his busy recording schedules and other engagements. When you mention the name Lyrical G in Ugandan hip-hop circles what will automatically run through one’s mind is “the conscious rapper”. Be it conscious rap, Lovey Dovey melodies or straight up Battle rap. The L is still holding his own. He’s still keeping in G, writing rhymes attending Hip-hop concerts doing collaborations with other artist’s recording, collecting rap music and of course still keeping close to his Girl. Still composed with an effortless sense of Humor and friendly character all around him he still goes out to party though not as hard as in the past. Check Silk Royale on any Tuesday night and you bet to find him in one of his favorite corners chatting away with friends. He still thinks his rapping is a hobby than a career. When yours truly the puzzle finally got to him, the agenda of the discussion was none other than a Low down on his latest album that has a provisional title of; “BACK AT IT AGAIN”. Lyrical G lets us in on what he’s been up to and the way forward;
MU: So what has the L been up to lately?
LG: Well I’ve just been chilling, performing and writing a lot.
MU: So you’ve just completed your latest album “Back at it again” what’s the L trying to bring out to his fan base on this album?
LG: Well I must say I am too focused on this one. I feel it’s my best work so far. It’s a multidimensional album on which I am trying to give people what they expect of Lyrical G. It’s a representation of what they have been expecting from me. It boasts of different styles, Different sounds and it’s an album that brings out the best of my Lyrical process. So if you love real rap music. This is the album for you.
MU: So take us through the songs;
LG: Back at it again is self explanatory. It basically explains that I am going nowhere in this rap game. So even after the silence I can still get back again. It’s a hard rap track produced by Benon of Benon & Vamposs at his Swangz productions. Lemmie show you features Young Nick and is a Swangz production is just an easy listen type of song. Am from where tackles the daily issues that face you and me today. It’s the type of song that will be enjoyed by both the young and old. It was produced at Audio central studios and features Rugged, Eazy Tex and Hardcore Prince. It was produced by Dawoo. Songa features Rapper/Producer Boogie Mo. It’s a battle rap type of song targeting the East African market. It was produced by DJ.Sharp. Song for Peace was produced By Dawoo and basically promotes peace all over the world. What’s your purpose in Life is a conscious track on which I address different people and their different life styles. On this I am asking are you true to others and to yourself as other issues. It was produced by Dawoo.
Mama’s song part 4 is a tribute to my late mum. On all my albums since 2003 I’ve always had a tribute to my lovely late mum. Something for something addresses the issues of cross generation sex. What is takes pays tribute to the all school. On this I am trying to say even if the world has moved on with new trends we cannot forget where it all started. I am trying to say I did it before and I am doing it again, the old school way. It boasts of a catchy tune and was produced by Gk. Nothing like hip-hop is a tribute to Hip-hop as in what I have always believed in.
MU: So what do you think of Ugandan Hip-hop today?
LG: Hip-hop has improved a lot. People are now watching, radio stations such as Capital FM and Hot 100 are doing us great for playing the songs and thanks a lot to them. Hip-hop videos are also doing more rounds on TV but I urge them to play them more.
MU: Have you featured on other artist’s records this year.
LG: Yes, I have featured on the Myth’s new album on the song “Tell me” produced by Dawoo. I’ve also featured with Able4 on a record produced by First Love. I have also released the first Hip-hop video this year for the song “Something like this”.
MU: Tell me about your expectations at the upcoming PAM awards this later year?
LG: For me a nod is just good enough.
MU: Many artists have been launching albums. How come Hip-hop artists don’t really care about launching? Do you plan a launch?
LG: like I told you before, I don’t really take myself like a musician. I take myself as a guy who can rap and as long as I release tracks then that’s also good enough for me.
MU: So where can one find Lyrical G music?
LG: You can get it by calling me through; +256-782-394079 and I’ll get you a copy.
MU: How come you’ve not really done any collaborations with other East African Hip-hop artists?
LG: We’ll I built my career as a solo artist. However many of these Kenyan and Tanzanian rappers are always in town but I think they are always intentionally prevented from recording with me. Not that I care though. I also recorded a song with Bebe Cool but the song went missing from the studio.
MU: Take us through your past albums.
LG: My first album was “Live from East Africa” then I followed it up with “Narudi” then “First and Flowmost” and Now a provisional title called “Back at it again”.
MU: Where do you think is your stand in the hip-hop industry today?
LG: I’ll leave that to those who have been following my career for the past few years. I am still the Lyrical G a guy that can rap and make a good album for all to enjoy. I am already recording my next album.
MU: Thanks for you time.
LG: Anytime.
