Kaweesa features on Movie Soundtrack

Many watch a movie and never pay attention to the soundtracks in the movie.  Kaweesa Richard has featured on “Walk On” which happens to be the end title song of the movie.  First Grader is set in a mountain village in Kenya. The film tells the remarkable true and uplifting story of a proud old Mau Mau veteran who is determined to seize his last chance to learn to read and write - and so ends up joining a class alongside six year-olds. Together he and his young teacher face fierce resistance, but ultimately they win through - and also find a new way of overcoming the burdens of the colonial past. It also currently showing in Cineplex Garden City at 12:00, 2:00, 4:30, 7:00, 9:30 PM.
Kawesa is a celebrated Ugandan musician of both local and international repute whose music truly represents the winning spirit of Uganda and indeed Africa. Kawesa’s music and works have stood the test of time for perfection, exclusivity, innovativeness and quality. Kawesa is accompanied by his 7 piece Spirit of Africa world music African band from Kampala, Uganda, East Africa. Their sound is reminiscent of the likes of Africa’s greats Hugh Masekela, Youssou Ndour, Salif Keita, and Baba Mal but with a healthy dose of funky-soulful original & unique Ugandan live-instrumentation from the African tube fiddle(Ndigindi) to the Ugandan Long drum(Ngalabi) rhythms thrown in for good measure. His simple yet extremely powerful songs have attracted an enthusiastic audience to date.

The official Jubilee song launched

The song titled “Yoga Yoga Uganda” features Barbara Kayaga, Richy, Hum Kay, Estar Nabaasa, Kawesa and published by Spirit of Africa Limited and recorded at Fenon Records. "Yoga Yoga Uganda" was launched yesterday at the Independence Monument.

'Yoga' in Jap and 'yoga noi' Iteso both means "greeting". In Luganda 'Yoga Yoga' means "Congratulations" and in Hindi/English 'Yoga' means "meditation". It is therefore clear that in all these translations, the word 'yoga' seems to conjure up sentiments of contentment. It is in light of the following that the song tittle and thematic is "Yoga Yoga".

Uganda is one of the youngest nations in the world with over 52% of its population under the age of 15 years. It is therefore imperative that we give priority to issues that ensure the holistic growth and development of our young people into becoming just, productive, orderly and patriotic citizens of the world. The future of a nation is indeed as stronger as its children stand. As we, together with friends from all over the world, celebrate our country’s 50 years of nationhood, may we shout out “yoga yoga” as our greetings of congratulations for having a place that we all call “home” but may we also take time to deliberately meditate on what each one of us today will leave behind as a legacy to be celebrated by our children come 5pm on October 9th 2062!

Meet Kawesa

"I draw my inspiration from the unknown. It is always artistically fulfilling to write my music without fear or certainty of where I am going with the creation." Kawesa

"Spirit of Africa" was Ugandan-born Kawesa's breakout album in Africa. The title sums up Kawesa's music, and his personality. Fiercely proud of his traditional Ugandan heritage, and passionate about writing songs around social issues, he truly embodies the musical spirit of his people.
